1.4.1 A densely populated country or area
Location: Dhaka, Bangladesh
Facts:
- Dhaka is the main capital city of Bangladesh
- Population density of 34,000 people/km2 – One of the highest population densities in the world
Reasons for high population density:
- Migration → 400,000 people move to Dhaka each year
PUSH Factors:
-People living on floodplains and coastal areas prone to natural disasters move to Dhaka’s higher grounds (climate change)
PULL Factors:
-More job opportunities with higher income
-Education → More schools, universities..
Problems of high population density:
- Housing shortage – Many slums and squatter settlements
→ 4 million people live in slums
→ Poor quality of life: Lack electricity, clean water, waste management - Traffic congestion – Lack of public transport, too many private vehicles
→ Air pollution – Lung problems, acid rain
→ Noise pollution – Stress, risk of heart disease
→ Economic loss – Loss of office workers productivity, waste of fuel stuck in traffic
