1.4.2 A sparsely populated country or area
Location: Canadian Northlands
Facts:
- Population density of 0.033/km2
- Low population density is the average number of people (less than 100) living on 1km2 of land
Reasons for low population density:
- Climate
→ Extremely cold. Winter temperatures as low as -50℃, summer temperatures -20℃
→ Short summers
→ Much of the land is permafrost (The ground is permanently frozen up to 300m deep)
→ During summer, the top metre of ice melts, resulting in marshy, waterlogged land – Restricts building and crop growth
Problems of low population density:
- Food bought at a higher price and transported
- Transport and communications extremely limited – Sparse railway and road systems
- Water transport is dictated by the seasons
- Many communities rely on air transport to link to the outside world
